How to guide

New to Directions? Check out our guides and hints and tips section below.

We have everything you need to know about using our hair colour. There are also hints and tips to help ensure you achieve great results safely every time.

Skin Patch Test

Choose a test area

Somewhere discreet is popular, like the inner elbow or behind the ear.

Wash and dry the area

After washing gently pat the area dry with a clean towel.

Dab colour onto skin

Use a cotton bud and just dab a small amount onto skin, smooth out (to around a small coin size) and allow to dry.

Wash and dry again

Gently pat the area dry with a clean towel, now you’re all done!

We always recommend you do skin patch and strand tests before using Directions to be on the safe side. Your strand test is key to determine your development time for full application.

If in this time you experience any signs of irritation, swelling, redness, itching, or feeling unwell – do not continue to use this product.

Strand Test

Wash a section of hair

Wash a small hidden section of hair with a PH balanced shampoo, rinse and towel dry.

Apply your chosen colour

Coat the strands in a teaspoon of your chosen colour. Development usually takes 15-30 mins – use a timer and check your hair at intervals, noting the time that desired development is achieved.

Rinse and dry your hair

Rinse and dry your hair as normal.

Begin full application

If your strand test’s a success and you're happy with the colour achieved, then you're ready to begin full application.

Top Tip

Wear protective gloves when applying and washing out Directions, and apply petroleum jelly or baby oil around the hair line and ears to avoid staining of the skin.

How to apply

Wash yourhair

Wear something old, in case you get messy. Wash your hair using a PH balanced shampoo so your hair achieves the best acid balance – this helps Directions develop as well as it can. Our Pre-colour Shampoo is perfect for this!

Apply your chosen colour

Apply Directions with the aid of a tint brush. Comb into the hair until it becomes frothy, ensuring the hair you are wanting to colour is entirely covered.

Let your colour develop

Your strand test results will determine your personal development time, but we advise to leave Directions to develop for 15-30 minutes on average.

Rinse thoroughly

Thoroughly rinse Directions out of your hair with warm water. Ensure you rinse away from the face and body (not in the shower) – multi coloured skin was so last year.

Dry and style your hair

Dry and style as usual, and then of course take a picture, upload it to Instagram and show off your new style!

Top Tip

Wear protective gloves when applying and washing out Directions, and apply petroleum jelly or baby oil around the hair line and ears to avoid staining of the skin.

Hints & Tips

Applying multiple colours

If you're applying multiple colours, the hair needs to be washed and dried separately. (Please take extra care during application if you are only partially colouring, to avoid staining the surrounding hair)

Want to go lighter?

If you’d like to achieve lighter shades than your current colour, we recommend you seek professional advice before colouring.

Creating pastel shades

To achieve your own unique pastel shades, you can dilute your chosen Directions colour with our White Toner.

Looking after your colour

To get the most out of your colour, we'd advise you to use a shampoo and conditioner that will protect it, such as our Colour Protecting shampoo and conditioner range.

Good to know

Try and avoid shampoos that have conditioner in.

Pro Tip

Did you know that you can mix Directions colours together, to make your own unique shades?

Warnings & Precautions

Avoid peroxide

Do not mix Directions with peroxide.

Not for brows or lashes

Do not dye eyelashes or eyebrows.

Avoid contact with eyes

If product comes into contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with clean water.

Clothes and bedding

Sometimes freshly coloured hair can bleed when wet, so ensure hair is completely dry before sleeping, or wearing light coloured clothing. (It may be safer to use old towels and bedding after application).

Good to know

Directions does not have a specific longevity on the hair. Shades may vary at the manufacturers discretion.

Want out?

Speeding up the fade

Wash, wash, wash! Washing hair more often than usual will help fade out Directions.

Apply conditioner

Apply conditioner to the hair (any old one will do), comb through, leave for 30 minutes and then rinse. (Conditioner can help lift the colour off your hair, you can do this as many times as you like).

Shampoo choice

Shampoo with anti-dandruff and clarifying shampoos to help fade out Directions.

Rinse with hot water

When washing, rinse with hot water (but not so hot you burn yourself).

If you need further help

Go to your salon. They should be able to assist most colour removals with their expertise.

Fading out

Please be aware your colour may not always completely wash or fade out back to your original shade.

Depending on the colour and porosity of your hair, a faded hue of the colour sometimes remains until recovered.

We don't like to recommend bleaching hair more than once, but if at your discretion you decide to do so, please seek professional advice first.
